A high school teacher exploring public lands in the western U.S. has uncovered something no paleontologist had ever seen: a 66.5-million-year-old trackway left by an adult Tyrannosaurus rex. The discovery, reported this week, marks the first confirmed footprint trail of a fully grown T. rex, and it's already shifting long-held assumptions about how the massive predator moved.

The trackway consists of several large footprints preserved in what was once a river floodplain. The impressions show a stride length of about 4 meters (over 13 feet), indicating an adult dinosaur walking at a comfortable pace.
