OAK PARK, Mich. \u2014 The crash happened just before 11 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. According to the Oak Park Department of Public Safety, a Dodge Charger allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a Buick Envision. The driver of the Buick, 59-year-old Dwayne Antonio Harvey, was trapped in the vehicle. Crews from the Detroit Fire Department had to extricate him. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

Harvey, a Detroit resident, was a teacher at Oak Park High School. He also drove for Uber in the evenings to make some extra money, officials said. His passenger, a 23-year-old man from Detroit, was ejected onto Eight Mile Road. When first responders arrived, the passenger was lying on the roadway, conscious and breathing. A second collision happened at the scene around 1 a.m. while Berkley police were assisting with directing traffic away from the fatal crash investigation. An unoccupied Berkley police patrol car was rear-ended by a driver who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver reportedly had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit, according to police. No officers were injured. The Berkley police department shared bodycam footage from the incident to spread awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.<\/p>\n
