Head coach Raheem Morris confirmed the choice Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation about how the team would handle its quarterback room after trading for Tagovailoa this offseason. The former Miami Dolphins star signed a four-year, $212.4 million extension with Atlanta in March.
Tagovailoa will become the sixth different Week 1 starting quarterback for the Falcons in the past six seasons — a stretch that has included Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Kirk Cousins, and Penix. The run of instability is precisely why the front office pushed so hard to bring in a proven veteran.
The more striking detail: Penix, who started nine games as a rookie in 2025, will not even suit up. Reports suggest the team views him as the long-term option behind Tagovailoa, but benching a young quarterback entirely — rather than dressing him as the backup — has raised eyebrows across the league.
Tagovailoa threw for 3,900 yards and 28 touchdowns with the Dolphins in 2025, but durability remains a concern after multiple concussions earlier in his career. The Falcons have reshaped their offensive line to protect him, and with weapons like Drake London and Bijan Robinson, the pieces are in place for a strong debut.
