A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field on September 8 and 9, sparking a G1 geomagnetic storm watch — and that could bring the northern lights into view for parts of nine U.S. states tonight.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued the storm watch, noting that multiple CMEs are in transit. The first impacts were forecast for late Monday, with additional arrivals possible into Tuesday.
If the geomagnetic activity peaks as predicted, the aurora could dip south of its usual high-latitude haunts. Forecasters say the best viewing window is typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, and clear skies will be essential.
The states with the highest chance of seeing the aurora tonight include northern parts of the Midwest and Northeast, such as Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and northern New England states like Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Forecasts vary by source — some outlets list as many as 11 states — but the consensus is that the best views will hug the Canadian border.
While a G1 storm is considered minor on the geomagnetic storm scale, it can still produce vivid auroras at higher latitudes. The SWPC advises skywatchers to move away from city lights, look north, and give their eyes time to adjust to the dark.
This is the latest in a series of active space weather events as solar activity ramps up toward the expected peak of Solar Cycle 25.
