John Malkovich has canceled his 2027 performance of 'The Music Critic' in Tel Aviv, Israel, after the production's promoters attributed false quotes to him in a press release.
The actor announced his withdrawal on Tuesday, saying he was "appalled" that the show's producers fabricated remarks about his involvement with the piece. Malkovich stated that he had agreed to perform but had never made the comments the release claimed.
'The Music Critic' is a one-man show in which Malkovich portrays a fictional music critic delivering withering assessments of classical performances. The production had been scheduled to return to Tel Aviv in 2027, following earlier engagements in Israel. The now-canceled date was widely promoted before Malkovich stepped away.

In his statement, Malkovich did not name the producers directly but said they "chose to create quotes that were never spoken" and that he "could not in good conscience proceed" under those circumstances. Representatives for the production company have not yet responded to requests for comment.
The controversy has reignited debates over how promotional materials are vetted, particularly when high-profile artists are involved. Malkovich, known for his outspoken public persona, has not said whether he will reschedule the show with a different producer.
