The United States and Denmark have reached a security agreement covering Greenland, ending a standoff that began after President Trump revived American interest in the Arctic island and repeatedly pressured Copenhagen over its future.
Trump announced the deal and called it historic, saying it secures "permanent" US military rights on Greenland. Danish officials confirmed an agreement had been reached but offered a more measured description of its scope.
The deal follows the most turbulent period in US-Danish relations in decades. Trump's earlier public push to acquire Greenland — an idea Danish leaders rejected outright — triggered a diplomatic rupture, including the cancellation of a planned state visit in 2019 and sharp exchanges over whether Denmark could be relied on as an ally.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has consistently said Greenland is not for sale, while leaving room for expanded security cooperation. Greenland's own government has also insisted that decisions about the island belong to Greenlanders.
Details of the agreement have so far been described in broad terms. The central element is expanded American military presence and access in Greenland, a territory the US has long viewed as strategically vital. Thule Air Base, now known as Pituffik Space Base, is already the US military's northernmost installation and sits on the shortest route between North America and Europe.
What remains unclear is what Denmark received in return. Officials have not publicly detailed the terms on economic cooperation, Arctic research, or defense cost-sharing. Legal questions about how a permanent military arrangement interacts with Greenlandic self-rule have also not been fully addressed.
The timing reflects growing American interest in Arctic competition, with Russia and China both expanding their presence in the region. Melting sea ice has opened new shipping lanes and exposed resources that were previously unreachable.
